Welcome to the website of the Institute of Slavic Studies at University of Debrecen.

With this website, we would like to help all our future, current and former students, and those interested in Slavic Studies, to gain an insight into the institute’s work: our courses, training programs, academic achievement, and special events.

We provide opportunities to study two languages, Russian and Polish at the Slavic Institute. 

Russian courses are available at all levels of university education (BA, MA, 50-credit specialization or minor, teacher training program (5+1), translation and interpreting MA, doctoral program), while Polish can be acquired as part of the 50-credit specialization program.

In case of both Russian and Polish, we provide language courses at all levels - from beginner to advanced.

The high quality and effective university education at the Institute of Slavic Studies is guaranteed by:

  • well-qualified, experienced language teachers (among them native speakers and bilinguals) who use the latest methodology;
  • both nationally and internationally well-known and respected experts in the field of Russian and Polish linguistics, literature and culture;
  • educational materials and academic publications, literary translations produced by the Institute's staff; the Institute's own academic publication, Slavica;
  • the institutional library's rich Slavic Studies related collection
  • extensive Russian and Polish relations based on bilateral international agreements
  • due to our international relations, our students have the opportunity to participate in Russian and Polish language courses, cultural events, student programs or spend a term or a year abroad
  • regular writer-reader meetings, visits and presentations of scholars and guest-instructors from Russian and Polish academic life
  • close cooperation with other Hungarian cultural institutions such as the Russian Cultural Center, the Polish Institute, or the Russian Center at the University of Debrecen, founded by the Russky Mir Foundation from Moscow.
